How can Kosher Certification help with Worldwide Export

Kosher – a Marketing Tool Worldwide

Every country has its own individual regulations for the food industry. Some are mandatory and some are not, they are just nice to have.

Large established buyers from distributors and supermarkets will have a standard specification sheet with tick boxes.

These would include kosher, halal organic etc. The more ticks you have on the spec sheet the more likely you are to be invited to present your products and then hopefully quote for business.

Some tick boxes may be allocated more weight than others. This information the buyer may or may not share with you.  The preferences of buyers varies considerably. You need to try to discover the buyer’s priorities.

One of the optional certifications is kosher. As to how optional this is may very well depend on the buyer.

The Dominance of Kosher

Why is there a dominance of kosher certification in many parts of the world including Australia, South Africa, US, Israel and parts of South America and Europe?

One factor for the prevalence of kosher is that products so certified are thought of as healthy. Remember, consumers buy on perception. Christians, Muslims, Jews and Atheists alike are helping fuel the robust market for kosher foods, according to Mintel. In a consumer survey of adults who purchase kosher food, Mintel found that the number one reason people buy kosher is for food quality (62%).

Part of this perception is driven by the fact that kosher certified products are known to be inspected by a reliable third part inspector. Not everyone perceives the same level of competence from government inspectors.

The second most common reason people say they purchase kosher food is “general healthfulness” (51%) and the third is food safety (34%). 14% of respondents say they purchase kosher food because they follow kosher religious rules. Another 10% buy kosher because they follow other religious rules with eating restrictions similar to kosher.

“Kosher food has gained the reputation of being more carefully produced and thoroughly inspected than non-kosher food,” comments a senior analyst at Mintel. “With recent food safety scares causing people to rethink even the most familiar food products, we can expect more adults to turn to kosher food as a way to ensure food safety and quality.”
Remember that if your product is new to the consumer and they are looking for quality marks and they don’t see the kosher logo first time round, it is unlikely they will come back in three months and check to see if it is now kosher certified.

As with any certification, once you have kosher certification there is no guarantee of success. You need to do all the marketing / after sales that you would do in the UK.

You also need to make sure your products are promoted through samplings and advertising and that your distributor is actively working on your behalf.
