Home to a billion people, India is among the world's largest producers and consumers of food. With a rapidly growing middle class and increasing globalisation, significant opportunities are emerging for UK food and drink producers to export to the Indian market.

Eversheds and the UK India Business Council bring you:

A roundtable discussion highlighting the opportunities & challenges for UK Food & Drink Companies to sell in India

This evening event aims to:
- Provide insight into the characteristics of the Indian food market
- Address the broader issues affecting the export of UK food and drink to India
- Highlight the opportunities and challenges that exist for UK food and drink companies in India.

The combined effect of India’s growing population and its rapid economic growth over the past decade has led to the generation of substantial demand for ‘value-added’ food and modern delivery formats in products and services.

Dramatic lifestyle changes have provided considerable opportunities for companies in the food and drink sector to provide wider and better choice to the discerning Indian consumer in the form of brands and product innovation. A strong network of importers now exists to support premium imported products into India.

At a time when markets across the globe were experiencing gloom and depression from June 2008 to June 2009, India’s consumer price index in food products flashed a double-digit inflation. Consumption continued to grow and companies continued to invest in store expansion and new concepts – in both grocery retail and food service.

Analysts estimate that India's organised retail sector, which comprises almost 10% of the total market and consists mainly of supermarkets and hyper-markets, will grow at more than 17 per cent a year during the next decade. The food service sector is predicted to expand by 6-7 per cent a year.
